Well now, would you look at her - 2022

Incinerator Gallery

180 Holmes Rd, Aberfeldie, Melbourne

Abstracted figurative sculptures, made from building and domestic materials, of female characters are drawn from the artists life and history. The characters, termed “Grotesques” represent untold memories; of arguments, hugs, love making, cooking, violence, mothering and other lived moments. These memories have been isolated, made whole and gifted agency via immortalisation in their formal painted portraits.
The memory thus personified as an object becomes open to investigation, like a crime scene the object is observed and classified, but the Grotesque forms and painted portraits will raise questions rather than divulge any answers, they have joined forces and are now the spectators in the gallery.
Implicit in this game of voyeurism, the audience invited to look at these paintings, is keenly aware of being watched in turn by the subject matter within. Are the characters now watching the audience, wondering questions about them in turn? Is anyone going to give up their secrets or will we all just quietly and slowly back out of the gallery, never to speak of it again.
